Wohnstadt Carl Legien

The Carl Legien estate is a large housing estate in Prenzlauer Berg ( Pankow ), from the Weimar Period. Built in 1928 – 1930 by Bruno Taut and Franz Hillinger it was described as a ‘residential city’. Intended as housing for workers, the estate is named after the former union boss Carl Legien.
Taut and Hillinger’s plans consisted of six elongated, U-shaped apartment blocks, each grouped around landscaped courtyards. This Achieved the necessary high-density housing, with a much greener environment than other such buildings of the period. Their ideas were based on similar Scandinavian and Dutch models.
